This piece highlights the people and clubs shaping LGBTQIA+ sport across Australia, including the volunteers behind the Perth Spectres. Brendon Entrekin, one of the founding members of Perth’s branch, is recognised for his long-standing work building inclusive sporting spaces and strengthening governance across multiple codes.

  • From the early days of the first Spectres teams to the now-national network of clubs in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide and Perth, our community has grown because of people like Brendon who create places where LGBTQIA+ players feel welcome, supported and able to compete as themselves.

  • The awards also reflect the wider momentum in LGBTQIA+ sport, celebrating those who drive participation, visibility and belonging. As the community looks ahead to the 2030 Gay Games, stories like these show how far we’ve come and how many dedicated hands have built the foundations we now stand on.
