This story traces the growth of Spectres Australia from a small Sydney group in 2001 to a nationwide network of inclusive basketball clubs. Andrew Bondini reflects on how the Spectres became a home for people seeking safety, visibility and community in sport, and how collaboration with Melbourne United and the NBL continues to strengthen that message.
From seven players preparing for the 2002 Gay Games to clubs across five cities, the Spectres movement has created spaces where LGBTQI+ people can play basketball openly and confidently.
Support from Melbourne United and the NBL, including Pride Round engagement, helps reinforce that basketball is for everyone and encourages more people to step forward as their true selves.
