This story traces the growth of Spectres Australia from a small Sydney group in 2001 to a nationwide network of inclusive basketball clubs. Andrew Bondini reflects on how the Spectres became a home for people seeking safety, visibility and community in sport, and how collaboration with Melbourne United and the NBL continues to strengthen that message.

  • From seven players preparing for the 2002 Gay Games to clubs across five cities, the Spectres movement has created spaces where LGBTQI+ people can play basketball openly and confidently.

  • Support from Melbourne United and the NBL, including Pride Round engagement, helps reinforce that basketball is for everyone and encourages more people to step forward as their true selves.
